I know what you're thinking, and yes this pun was very intentionally thought out.
Most of the reason anyone looks forward to a graduation party is because they are going to have awesome food.
Over the past weeks, I've been to a few graduation parties and still have quite a few to go to, and the one thing that really gets people in the door is your food. Some people like breakfast, some people like snacks, and some people like to serve a full meal. When I graduated from high school we decided to serve a full meal and I really didn't help with much between the end of school and preparing other aspects of the party. But this time around graduating from Culinary School, I wanted things to be different. I had a very small party with only very close friends and family and I got to plan and prepare all of the food. As stressful as making large amounts of food can be, I was really happy with the outcome. I decided to serve 5 different hors d' oeuvres.
The hors d' oeuvres were a Ropa Vieja (from my Cuban dinner), a Mediterranean Chicken Salad on a Skewer, Fruit, Meat and Cheese Platter (with Brie, Gouda, Cheddar, Blue Cheese, Roast Beef, Salami, and Turkey) , Champagne Cake bites, and Coconut Raspberry Meringues.
Overall, I don't think anything could've turned out better! Basically five straight days of prep is bound to be stressful and I'm not going to lie, I had a meltdown or two. But that comes with just about any long term project. I really enjoyed broadening my skills and working on more than just the baking side of things. I've really come to enjoy cooking more over the past 6 months.
In other recent news, I just recently launched the start of my own business! It's called My Father's Joy. It's a little in-home bakery. I started out by selling cupcakes at my Mom's garage sale and now I've had several other opportunities to showcase my stuff. So, I'm really excited and I linked to my Facebook page right to the name of my bakery. So feel free to check it out!

Question of the day: How many graduation parties have you gone to this season?
A: I think I will have been to about 8 this season
My name's Abby. I am a Iowa Culinary Institute graduate, current owner of a small online bakery, and a transaction coordinator to a couple pretty cool realtors. All in all, life is busy, but the kitchen never changes, so join me as we Take on the Kitchen!
