In May, I launched my own baking/catering business called My Father's Joy.
Since forming my business there has been a shift when it comes to baking for an order as opposed to baking for myself or friends. I mean obviously all of the processes are the same, the ingredients, the process, but a few things are definitely pretty different.
How I bake is actually affected by who I'm baking for. When I'm baking on my own, I'm much more likely to add in a dash of this or not measure quite as accurately. But when I'm baking for a client, I have to be much more precise. Not only to maintain the integrity of the recipe but also to keep track of food costs.
And, I'm not gonna lie, it is a lot less stressful to bake for myself. Baking and Decorating a cake in 3 hours is the definition of stressful. Not that I don't love helping people but sometimes, it makes me not love baking. That's why I am super grateful that my business hasn't taken off super fast. It's slowly growing to about an order every other week. Which is perfect, because I just started working as a Realtor full-time.
Launching my business was probably one of the most terrifying things I've ever done, and if you know anyone who has, they'll probably give you the same answer. Investing money into yourself can be nerve-racking, but as long as you have a team of people behind you that love and support you, I say follow your dreams. Heck I'm only 19, I never thought that at this age/stage in my life, this is what I would be doing. But it's been working out pretty great!
So, all of this to say, sometimes even your passion project/dream job is going to suck sometimes. Because things don't always turn out how you think and things are never 100% perfect. But that is life and it would be no fun if everything worked out perfectly. Uniqueness and mistakes are what make life so exciting!
So, if you live in Central Iowa hit me up with your baking/catering needs! I don't have a real pricing sheet yet, but I am working on one as we speak! And I am so excited to see what else is in store for my business. Go give my business a like on Facebook at My Father's Joy!
